Not another blog!

Yes, another blog.

BUT WHY?

Years ago, I had a blog that I would occasionally post to. I explored things such as religion, music, and friendship. Fortunately for everyone, this faded into obscurity, and I deleted it, hoping that some archive somewhere never found it. But ten years later, I find myself writing again—more and more every day. I cannot keep my thoughts contained but feel like Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit’s modern forums to be tedious and unfulfilling.

I spent a lot of time growing up in chat rooms and on forums. These are days that I hope will return. Days when the internet was young, and not everyone had their minds fried by social media. When I had to choose my words carefully because every letter meant another magical process of bytes had to work its way through my phone line. Those were the days. I miss them a lot.

But now, there is noise. Too much noise. We substituted the pleasant days of MySpace for services willing to participate in the crumbling of the society that we share. For this, I am bitter and find myself longing for those days more. I keep a Facebook around, but every day I think about deleting it. Every single day. This constant struggle between, “I lived without it before, I can live without it again,” and “That one kid posting memes is worth it.”

As a compromise, I have let my timeline grow darker. Except for the occasional multi-paragraph letters that I bang out on my keyboard now and then, my Facebook use is a shell of what it used to be. And I am okay with that. Strike that; I am happy about it.

But at the same time, I like to write. I want to write about my day, about my thoughts, about the obscure topics that fill my brain. I guess that is where this new blog comes in—to fill that void. While Facebook and Instagram are effortless, I want something that I can manage. I want something where I can post and not be reliant upon and desperate for an algorithm’s attention.

I was pleasantly surprised to find “mdc.zone” was not owned by anyone, so I took it. After years of mining the internet for the perfect domain, I found it. I found it, and I claimed it. And this is where my thoughts will live. Additionally, it gives me a place to upload my pictures without adhering to the Instagram dimensions (being a video guy, I love 16:9 and not the horrific 1.91:1 or 1:1 that Instagram utilizes). 2021 is not the early-days of DVDs, and I shouldn’t have to choose between full-screen and wide-screen.

So here we are, 500 words later, about a subject that no one cares about. My website’s tagline is what you can expect from me, ramblings about media, politics, and nature. Subscribe if that sounds interesting but don’t be shocked when I have an opinion you do not like (hell, I might have views that I don’t like.) The M.D.C Zone is about exploration, understanding, and the day to day life of an average millennial trying to survive.
